Yet another scam warning

So this one tends to be aimed at travellers, and as I know some of you use hotels etc for fun, like me, I thought I'd warn you how it works.

I am sure some of you, when you check into hotels, give a card for extras - room service etc. It's fairly common and usually a fairly safe thing to do.

Here's what happens, though.

The scammers call the hotel. They then ask to be put through to room xxx. Now, sometimes, of course, this is a miss. Sometimes, they actually have people loitering within earshot of reception listenting to harvest the room numbers of people checking in and giving a card.

Receptionists put the call through. Now, the problem stems from automatically diverting the call rather than waiting to say "Someone has called asking to be put through", because what they then do is proceed to explain it's the manager/receptionist and that there seems to be a problem with your card pre-authorisation and could you just please confirm the details while they try it again.

Sure.. you hand over the numbers, dates AND CVV.

Bank checks make this one less likely to go through anymore - especially for higher ticket value items - but not entirely.

Stay safe. x
